A new museum is about to open in Anyang City, Henan Province, showcasing the glory of the 3000 year Shang Dynasty civilization.

The Yin Ruins Museum will open to the public on February 26th. It is the first comprehensive archaeological museum in China, showcasing a panoramic view of the Shang Dynasty (around the 16th to 11th centuries BC).

Nearly 4000 unearthed cultural relics, including bronze ware, pottery, jade, oracle bones, etc., will be exhibited in the museum. More than three-quarters of them have never been publicly exhibited before.

The Yin Ruins Site was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2006 and is the capital of the late Shang Dynasty. Yin Ruins, founded in 1928, is the longest studied ancient capital site in China and is known as one of the birthplaces of modern Chinese archaeology.

The site also discovered oracle bones from 3300 years ago - animal bones and turtle shells carved for divination and event recording - revealing the oldest known Chinese character writing system.

Ruins of an urban road system and an artificial lake have been discovered in the royal ancestral temple area. At the same time, the oldest Shang King's Mausoleum was also discovered.

The 23 tanks unearthed from the Yin ruins will become the highlight of the new gallery. The life of the legendary Shang general Yazhang will be reflected through a complete set of physical objects excavated from his tomb.

At the same time, there are also commercial cultural relics collected from other regions of present-day China on display.

Through exhibits, the public can better see new discoveries and gain a comprehensive understanding of the achievements of the Shang Dynasty in politics, economy, agriculture, military, and other fields.

The original building of the Yin Ruins Museum opened in 2005, which was an important step in the process of applying for World Heritage.

The new museum costs 106 million yuan (14.7 million US dollars) and is located across the river from the palace and temple areas in the Yin ruins. Gao said that the exhibition covers an area of 17.5 hectares and an exhibition area of 22000 square meters.
