The successful ignition of China's first medium speed high-power ammonia engine in Dalian, Liaoning Province, Northeast China marks a breakthrough in related key technologies.

The ammonia fuel engine is independently developed and innovated by CRRC Dalian Co., Ltd. (CRRC Dalian) on the basis of independent research and development of diesel engine technology. It has the characteristics of low carbon, high safety, and good interchangeability.

This environmentally friendly engine can reduce carbon emissions by 80%, and a single cylinder can produce up to 208 kilowatts of power, with ammonia accounting for 85%.

Realized the full industry chain collaboration of ammonia fuel engine components, complete machines, and application scenarios. Its power level, economy, emissions, technology, and reliability are all at the advanced level both domestically and internationally.

The successful ignition has accelerated the carbon free development of Chinese engines, and added that in the application field of ammonia fuel ships, China's technological strength is on par with internationally renowned companies.

The principle of an ammonia powered engine is similar to that of a traditional internal combustion engine, which generates energy by mixing fuel and air for combustion, pushing the piston to move, and thus generating power. Differently, ammonia powered engines use ammonia as fuel, which has relatively stable chemical properties and needs to react with oxygen in the air at higher temperatures. Therefore, a specialized ignition device is needed to ignite the mixed gas.
